A colleague of mine from the Arizona State University school newspaper, the State Press, asked me to photograph her SLS Las Vegas wedding. I love it when old friends get in touch to have me photograph their weddings – so I jumped at the chance. I love the desert in the spring. The Sayers Club at the SLS Las Vegas is a private event space and bar – they host concerts and other events, and sometimes weddings. We were treated with a ceremony at the same time as the sun set over the world’s largest gift shop across the street – and I couldn’t resist capturing the reflection in the big gorgeous SLS windows. You might recognize the officiant, by the way – I photographed his wedding years ago in Tempe, AZ. This is my first wedding of 2017 – turns out an SLS Las Vegas wedding is a glamorous way to kick off the season.
Anna and Brett and I took some Germany football jerseys and beer to China Beach and climbed on the rocks at sunset for their San Francisco engagement session.
They met in San Francisco while watching a World Cup game as they cheered on their favourite team. It was windy but bright, sunny, and a truly picturesque view; a few other photos from this session feature the Golden Gate Bridge prominently in the background. I’m delighted to be flying to Berlin next summer with them to photograph their wedding. I’m also grateful that they were such good sports about rock climbing on the beach.
My good friends Jamie and Ernesto had a beautiful ceremony at Sequoyah Country Club, nestled in the hills overlooking Oakland. Seems like the ceremony was touching for the mariachi band too.
Sarah and Ritz asked my good friend Deb Huber to photograph their wedding, which is how I ended up at the stately Spring Ranch in Mendocino as a second photographer. Everything clicked into place for this shot – I remember running through the grass, envisioning something like this, as they walked up the aisle. This is from a few years ago – I had the chance to photograph a pair of weddings in New York a week apart from one another, jumped at the opportunity, and sandwiched a visit to Montreal in between. This is dad, holding mom, watching the wedding ceremony. The bride and groom wanted to be married somewhere lush – the Lamberton Conservatory was the perfect venue.
My favourite photo from a wedding a month ago, which I had the privilege of photographing as second shooter for the talented Molly Watson. Mill Valley’s Old Mill Park is positively blanketed with trees and ivies, which render the sunlight under the redwood canopy quite dark and very directional. The lack of light can be a little frustrating for photographers, but it brings out the detail in the bride’s elegant layered gown in this photo. The magenta tulle and matching shoes were striking against this backdrop and at the lush Outdoor Art Club, which hosted the reception.
Lydia and Wesley were married in west Marin County, near the Pacific Coast. Their match was tangible; this is one of many points during their wedding ceremony when they appeared to find themselves sharing the same feeling at the same time. I love shooting in harsh sun – it can build pockets of beautiful bouncing light.
Thanks for visiting! I thought this might be a nice place to start my new wedding blog, Marry Unique. This photograph was taken at Roxy and Sean’s Tahoe wedding this fall, and is my favourite recent confluence of sudden splendid light and layers of moment. I’ve seen clouds part ways to sunshine on a wedding day before, but never with such perfect timing. We spend a lot of time hoping that the location and the light will come together just so, and on this day, it did.
